MPAN Numbers Explained

MPAN Numbers Explained

What is an MPAN?

An MPAN (Meter Point Administration Number) is a unique reference number assigned to every electricity meter in homes and businesses. It identifies that specific electricity meter and its supply point.

A few key points about MPAN numbers:

· It's different from your customer account number with the energy supplier

· It's also separate from the MPRN number, which is the equivalent for gas meters

· The MPAN allows energy companies to identify and track usage for your particular electricity meter

· You'll need to provide your MPAN when switching electricity suppliers or getting a new service set up

So in summary, the MPAN acts as a distinct ID code for your electricity meter location, allowing utilities to properly track and bill for the electricity being supplied there. Having this number handy makes switching or setting up a new service easier.

Where do I find an MPAN number?

· Look on your electricity bill, typically under a section labelled "Details of Charge" or something similar

· The MPAN will be formatted as a letter "S" followed by two rows of numbers

· The first row will have 8 digits

· The second row will have 13 digits

· So the full MPAN is 21 digits long in total

· It may or may not be enclosed in a box on the bill, but the distinct S+8digits+13digits format will identify it

· Do not confuse the MPAN with your customer account number - it is a separate meter reference code

Checking your electricity bill and spotting that precise 21-digit code split into the S+8+13 format is the way to locate your property's specific MPAN number needed for things like switching energy suppliers.

What happens to my MPAN number if I move?

If you change electricity suppliers, these numbers will not change and will remain the same as they are linked to the property. However, if you’re planning to move to a new property, then you will be assigned a new MPAN number in your new property as each MPAN is directly linked to the meter and property and not to the business or electricity account holder.

When you move to your new property and agree on a new contract with an electricity supplier, they will let you know your new MPAN numbers for your new property which you will continue to use, so long as you operate from and continue to require an electricity supply for your business.
